FAQ: The team and the game

When did the club form?

  • Manchester Phoenix was formed in 2003.

Are you the Manchester Storm?

  • No. The Phoenix has no connection whatsoever with the Manchester Storm ice hockey team, which played between 1995 and 2002.

How do I get the team to visit my school?

  • Manchester Phoenix runs a schools visiting programme during the season. Last year the players visited over 50 local schools running hockey activities and presentations on the health and fitness aspects of the sport. If you want a visit, then please encourage your school to contact the Phoenix office for further information.

Can I meet one of the players?

  • Many players sign autographs once they have showered after the game, but we can’t guarantee who will be available. Make your way around to the timekeeper’s bench after the match.
  • There will also usually be one or two players in the lounge bar after a game, ready for a relaxing drink and chat.

Can I watch a training session?

  • The training sessions are generally closed. Season ticket holders will be invited to some special training sessions during the season.

What’s the difference between ‘league’, ‘cup’, ‘challenge’ and ‘playoff’ games?

  • The league consists of 10 teams. Each team plays every other 3 times at home and 3 times away, for a total of 54 games.
  • The top 8 teams in the standings at the end of the season play a two-leg quarter-final ‘playoff’ game. The 4 winners then play the semi-finals and final at the ‘playoff weekend’ which was held last year at the Nottingham based National Ice Centre in April.
  • There are two cup competitions – the knockout cup and a mini-league challenge cup.
  • Phoenix will play two warm-up challenge games before the start of the main season.

How do I get to play?

  • Phoenix have teams for all ages groups. Details are on the website, here.

What are ‘icing’, ‘slashing’ and ‘cross-checking’? What are the rules of the game?
