Blackburn Hawks 0 Trafford Metros 3
As we all know local derbies can be fierce and create bitter rivalry between clubs, and this one is no different. This rivalry goes back decades between the two teams all be it now the Metros play out of the Silverblades rink rather than the old Devonshire road home. With this game taking place in the Blackburn arena it was the Hawks turn to build this game and after the Metros Embarrassed the Hawks at home by shutting them out 5-0, the Hawks according to their website were out for ‘revenge’ but unbeknown to the Lancashire based outfit the Metros were ready to take the fight to them in their own backyard.
By the time the puck was dropped at 17:45 the talking was over and it was down to the Metros to finally show the Blackburn crowd that they are the better team for the first time since the Metros relegated them in the playoffs a few years back. The Metros this evening had a plan and systems in place and were determinded to stick to them and they did, hard work and gritty determination to unsettle the hawks. The rest of the period saw the team’s trade chances at either end with neither team taking an advantage into the first intermission.
The Second period however told a different story and what a story it was. Just after the 3 minute mark the Metros were on the board with their new power third line as Robyn Crebbin found Ben Brown at the side of the Hawks net who then passed the puck into the slot to find Tom Revesz who unleashed a twisted wrist shot to find the top shelf of Daniel Brittle’s net and stunned the Hawks faithful. But the Metros weren’t done there for the period and the shots rained with no answer from the Hawks who just didn’t know what to do or how to take the Metros, but the Metros knew exactly what they wanted to do and they had one goal in mind to upset the Hawks on their own ice and Just after the 30 minute mark they took another step towards doing so as former Metros player Brian Worrall tried to skate the puck from his own zone he came across the inform Jamie Rogerson who dispossessed his former team mate an took the puck into the Hawks zone and found the twine in the hawks net with a howitzer. The rest of the period was seen out and the Metros went in 2-0, Could it be happening again? A shut out for the Metros but this time in the Hawks nest? That is exactly what the Metros had their eyes set on and no one was going to take it from them.
Again the third period was cagey as Blackburn didn’t want to lose but the Metros wanted their shut out. To the Hawks credit they outshot the Metros in the final frame but all they came across was a brick wall in the form of Paul Maudsley in the Metros net and he was seeing the puck as if it was a beach ball and the Hawks were just not good enough to beat Paul in between the pipes. It wasn’t till the final minute of the game, well to be exact 3 seconds from the buzzer till the Metros victory was complete, when Jamie Rogerson lined up for a face off in the Hawks zone, after they had replaced their keeper to prevent the third goal being an empty net one, Jamie took the shot straight off the draw and found the back of the Hawks net 3-0 and that was it. 120 minutes of hockey and the Hawks still haven’t breached the Metros goal!!! A well deserved Man of the Match went to Paul Maudsley in the Metros net, but to be honest it could of been a team award well done lads you’ve lifted the hoodoo, be proud of your selves we all are you are turning heads this year and long may it continue!
