Team GB: Myers continues to impress

Wednesday, 16th April 2008

Team GB have had a tough start to the 2008 World Championships facing the two strongest sides in Poland and Austria. On Wednesday they face Korea in a must win game. One major positive from the games to date has been the form of Nottingham Panthers forward Matthew Myers who has excelled and won the player of the game award against the host nation on Monday evening.

"He has been outstanding," said Head Coach Paul Thompson, "no complaints what so ever. He listens, works hard and carries out his duties as requested. What I like about him is that he gives me everything he has every shift, there are no half measures with Matt, you get it all. He comes back to the bench and he is hurting, he has just put out everything he had and you can't ask for more than that."

Assistant coach Tony Hand knows what it takes to perform at this level as a player and he also believes that Myers is leading the troops out in Austria. "We haven't got a better player on the ice that Matthew right now, that's for sure," said the Manchester Phoenix Coach. "Matthew is leading us. He is using his assets well, he is big and strong and when he gets going there are few that can stop him. If he continues this week as he has in the first two games then he will have had one hell of a week."

Thompson continued, "Hockey is a possession game, the team with more of the puck generally wins, so you need your face off men to perform well, Matthew hasn't lost out on too many draws this week, he is competitive in the draw, it's a one on one battle and he has that look about him that he will win every one."
