Niggling injury rules Courtenay out of All-Stars Game

Dave Matsos, head coach of the Northern All-Star squad has been forced into making another change to his roster for the game to be played this coming Thursday at the Coventry Skydome Arena,

Eddie Courtenay of the Mincoffs Newcastle Vipers has asked to be excused because of a recurring injury and in his place, Matsos has selected Vipers Jeff Hutchins.

Matsos commented, “Eddie is a quality player and it’s disappointing to lose his skills and fire-power for the All-Star game. Jeff Hutchins is also a talented player and I know he’ll fill the gap and enjoy the experience.”

All-Stars in Skills Competitions

The interval between the first and second period will see a Fastest Team relay race with three players from each squad skating through a series of cones from one end of the rink to the other before turning for the sprint back and handing over to the next skater. The winning team will be awarded a bonus goal to be added to their all-Star game score.

Northern head coach Dave Matsos has selected David Longstaff (Newcastle Vipers), Mark Hurtubise (Edinburgh Capitals) and Robert Dowd (Sheffield Steelers) to race against the three choices for the South named by Paul Thompson. The Blaze and GB coach has picked Russ Cowley and Dan Carlson (both Coventry Blaze), and Tyson Teplitsky (Cardiff Devils).

The second interval will see the Hardest Shot competition and again, both coaches have selected three players to blast pucks as hard as they can into an unguarded goal. Choosing for the South, Paul Thompson has named Brad Voth (Cardiff Devils), Jonathan Weaver (Coventry Blaze) and Corey Neilson (Nottingham Panthers). Pitting their strength and shooting technique against this heavyweight trio on behalf of the North will be Colin Shields (Belfast Giants), Rod Sarich (Sheffield Steelers) and Taylor Christie (Edinburgh Capitals). Again, the Hardest Shot winning team will receive a bonus goal to add to their All-Star game score.
