Walker on Macmillan Cancer mission

Tuesday, 23rd June 2009

Manchester Phoenix forward Adam Walker is training hard for the 2009-10 ice hockey season, but ahead of the season beginning in September, he’s aiming to put his training to good use for the Macmillan Cancer charity.

Walker, preparing for his fourth season with the Altrincham-based Phoenix club, is aiming to cycle from the just over 300 miles from London to Paris in just four days in August with Macmillans as the beneficiary of his efforts.

“My Grandad suffered with and eventually died from cancer and the people at Macmillans were unbelievably good to him. The care and support they offer is second to none and I want to try and give something back to them. I’m passionate about this and if I can help by raising some money, then the effort will be well worth while.”

The August itinerary will see Walker leave Blackheath, London on August 19th for the 90 mile first leg to Dover. The ferry crossing to Calais will give him chance to recover before the second day stint of 78 miles from Calais to Arras. Day three sees a further 78 miles planned from Arras to Compiegne before the final section of 56 miles from Compiegne to Paris on August 22nd with the cycle ride culminating at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.

To make fundraising easier and more tax efficient, 23-year old Adam has created a special webpage at www.justgiving.com/adamwalker29 where Phoenix fans and Macmillan supporters can help him reach his target figure of £1500.

Adam commented, “Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: Macmillan Cancer Support gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.”
