A Luke at summer

Tuesday, 14th June 2011

Jim “Tambo” Piper caught up with J Davidson sponsored Manchester Phoenix Championship winning D-man Luke Boothroyd to discuss all things Summer, Studies and Sport.

Luke, how do you fill in those hockey-less summer days and nights?

“I have a full time job in a Psychiatric Unit working all sorts of shifts. That is a major part of the time. I go to the gym, keeping to a fitness schedule and spend some downtime with friends and family.“

You are studying at University at the moment. What is your subject and how is it going?

“I am at Bolton University doing my master’s degree in Psychology. Almost done, just my dissertation to complete and submit.”

Most hockey players have a keen interest in golf. Do you have another sporting passion?

“Don’t laugh! Huddersfield Town are the boys. We made the play off final this year but just failed to make it into the Championship where we belong. I get to most mid week games and the big ones at weekends after the hockey season is finished.”

Have you had your summer holiday yet? Are you a beach person or do you prefer sight-seeing?

“I am off to Portugal for two weeks. My girlfriend likes the beach and the pool, I like to explore and see new things, so it will be a mixture of both.”

On to next season. What sort of fitness programme do you follow to keep in shape?

“I go to the gym 4 or 5 days a week. My plan involves muscle building, strength training and conditioning. I also keep up the core strengths needed for the sport. After my holiday, I will go back on the ice in Bradford to dust off the cobwebs and get ready for pre season training camp.”

We have Martin Cingel joining us for next season. Can you remember playing against him? What is he likely to bring to the club?

“I have played against Martin in the old BNL when I was at Hull and in the Elite League with Phoenix.

“He was a standout player for years with the Edinburgh Capitals. Even when things were not going so well with the Caps, he stayed loyal and turned up every night. I think he will bring that loyalty to Phoenix and now he is on a line with Tony and our still to be signed other import, I think he will increase his points output and be a great asset to the club.”

Thanks Luke, have a great holiday and then back to the business of defending our championship.
