Phoenix at the Altrincham Carnival

Tuesday, 4th July 2006

This past weekend it was the turn of Altrincham to have their Carnival, and the Phoenix were there!  Mags Pullen gives us her account of the day.

Our hardy band of Phoenix supporters travelled to Altrincham this weekend to tackle their carnival, which was much more physical than Oldham's, as we were too late to hire a float and had to walk the whole 3 1/2 miles!

After meeting up at St. Margaret's Rd, we transformed our trusty little Ford Focus Estate into a miniature mobile advertising hoarding by covering it in bunting and flags. The organisation of the whole event went like clockwork and bang on the stroke of eleven the parade set off.

In blazing sunshine Diane Daley, Chris McDonaugh, Jon Curtis, Alex Jones and Ben Haddock spread themselves across the width of the road in order to open out our very heavy, 20ft banner that advertised our new rink and strode out proudly, closely followed by Kath Carter and myself carrying our collection buckets and bringing up the rear defence was Dave driving the car.

We were helped along by a fabulous bunch of musicians who were right behind us in the parade and we ended up dancing all the way to the end.

The response we received from the masses of spectators lining the route was tremendous. We were stopped every couple of minutes by people asking "where are you playing from, when are you playing, is it all on schedule and can the public skate" and were applauded all along the entire route.

All in all, we had a brilliant time and it certainly put us all in the mood for the coming season and, judging by the feedback we received all day, we aren't the only ones!

Roll on September!
