Sutton join Phoenix for 'BIG ICE'

Sunday, 5th November 2006

Just like Manchester's junior club, Sutton Sting set up just six months ago.
The club train at Sutton In Ashfield's Leisure Centre on an ice pad just 27m x 24m.  Sting have players in U10, U12, U14 and U16 age groups. All are relatively new to the sport and they are busy preparing for the teams entering the league next season.   Recently, Phoenix invited Sutton to join our younger players for a Saturday training session at Bradford.  Despite a painfully early start, the Nottinghamshire outfit filled a coach with 22 players plus parents for their 9am appointment with the 'big ice' in West Yorkshire.

The practice gave nearly 40 children aged from 7 upwards their first chance to showcase their skills and talents to a new audience.  The session began with warm up drills designed to help the coaches assess the range of abilities.  Players were then mixed into balanced lines and given a chance to join in a practice with another team.  A great time was had by all the players involved, who are now looking forward to their next chance of meeting up with their new friends to repeat the exercise.

Phoenix would like to extend thanks to the Sutton Sting families, and coaches, Gary Apsley and Ian Johnson, for helping to make this session happen.  We wish them well as they wait for their new Ice Rink to be built in Sutton in Ashfield.
