The Phoenix Under-14s played their inaugural game against neighbours Bradford , who iced a fairly weakened squad due to their U-12 team playing at Blackburn the same afternoon. With a couple of players missing from the Phoenix line up, Coach Nurse iced three basic lines for the game with Sam Heyes starting in goal for Phoenix.
Despite Scott Robson drawing a tripping penalty with just over a minute played, within 16 seconds, Paul Swindlehurst set up Jared Dickinson to score from close range, shorthanded. A scramble around the Bulldogs net saw Phoenix then score a second goal through Josh Sweet on the same penalty kill by Josh Sweet. By the five-minute mark, Phoenix had established a three-goal cushion as Taylor Danson started a move involving Bobby Streetly and finished clinically by Tom Wilkinson at the back post.
Phoenix dominated the period throughout leaving Heyes between the pipes as a virtual spectator. Bobby Streetly added a fourth marker against his former club following good work behind the net from Wilkinson. Even with Ryan Hulme sitting out an Interference penalty, Phoenix continue to pressure the Bulldogs and Streetly neatly set up Jordan Bannon to blast in goal number five. And just 14 seconds later Tom Wilkie found Swindlehust in open ice and he converted the Phoenix sixth goal past Cosimini in the Bulldogs goal.
A great move then onvolving Bannon and Dickinson set up Swinny for his second in less than a minute. The Phoenix were running riot and looking to score a bagful against the hapless Bulldogs. More pressure on the Bulldogs net saw Shannon Lingwood feed Harvey Treadgold before taking up a screening position in front of the net, Treadgold found Sarah Hutchinson at the point and the ensuing wristshot beat the unsighted goalie for an emphatic 8-0 score at the break.
Phoenix come out flat for the second, mainly due to lack of a competitive game. Almost inevitably, a degree of complacency had set it and early moves broke down disappointingly. However, with Hutchinson serving a Holding penalty, Scott Robson went on a solo skate from centre ice and buried the puck past Cosimini for 9-0. More penalties followed for both teams the pace of the game slowed as Referee Evans began to call every infringement and then deemed it necessary to explain every decision to both team benches. The period fizzled out as anything but a competitive game, and just before the hooter, Lingwood and Robson get assists on a Jordan Bannon goal.
Coach Nurse gave his Phoenix squad a second interval talking-to after the poor performance in the second period, demanding an improvement for the final session. With Bulldogs players falling like nine pins on some hefty checks, the now pedestrian paced game approached the the two hour mark! At 38:09, Swinny set up Shannon Lingwood to make it 11-0 and the final minute saqw Yorkshire-born Streetly bag his third assist of the game in setting up Scouser Jordan Bannon to complete his hat trick.
Not the best game of hockey overall, as a great first period by the home team was followed by some fairly average hockey. MVP went to Scott Robson with 1+1. Phoenix take on Nottingham in two weeks and will hope for a performance similar to that at the NIC last weekend.
