Grimsby Dynamoes 1 - 7 Phoenix U-16B.

A superb awayday victory in the opening game of the season saw the Manchester Phoenix U-16B team thrash Grimsby Dynamoes on their home ice pad.

With very little gameday preparation due to the school holidays, Phoenix went into the game not knowing what to expect from a Grimsby team that are usually tough and physical on their small ice pad.

Sporting their new black mean-looking away jerseys, the Phoenix quickly put the home side under pressure team had the early pressure on the home side with netminder Tharratt making a couple of smart saves from Jared Dickinson and Kieran Ferris. Despite holding the early advantage, Phoenix fell behind to the opening goal of the game in the fifth minute as the Dynamoes recovered from a slow start. Phoenix were soon back on top and creating chances, but never seriously troubling Tharratt in the home goal throughout the remainder of the first period.

The first interval afforded Coach Dan Berry time for a quick pep talk and his words had the desired effect. Barely two minutes after the restart, Harvey Treadgold collected the puck in centre ice and bamboozled the home defence before sweetly netting the equaliser with a backhand shot into the roof of the net. And a further two minutes later, U-14 centreman Jaren Dickinson beat Tharratt to give the Phoenix a lead they would not relinquish. Grimsby changed their netminder and tried to bounce back, but Nicole Jackson in the Phoenix goal was very reassured between the pipes making confident saves with her goalie stick to maintain the visitors lead. The play began to increase in intensity with Phoenix playing the body well, and still creating chances that eventually led to Shannon Lingwood increasing the lead shortly before the second interval.

The third period saw Phoenix quickly cement their superiority as Treadgold and Dickinson both added their second goals of the game. Shannon Lingwood then set up Tom Wilkinson for a back post finish for 6-1 and Jake o'Connor was unlucky to see a fine shot come back off the goalframe. Grimsby were rattled and losing their composure while the now confident Phoenix continued their impressive display of clean, hard-hitting hockey. Phoenix capped a superb opening to their season when a pass out of defence from Lingwood was collected by Treadgold and after just a couple of paces he ripped a terrific shot past Grimsby's second string goalie White to complete his personal hat-trick, and secure his Man of the Match award.
