U18s - Feisty Phoenix maul Menace

Wednesday, 7th November 2007

A smaller than usual squad of only 11 skaters plus netminder arrived at Coventry, with both Sam Leaver and Phil Hamer unable to make the trip, but Phoenix welcomed Mike Townsend and Rick Ravey back from injury.

Motorway problems meant the game started with the Phoenix legs still on the M6 as they struggled to make their customary quick start. It took nearly four minutes into the game before Phoenix registered their first goal, and after that, the team settled quickly. The superior skills of the Phoenix squad showed through and the goals started to come with the home side taking penalties.

1st period - Coventry Menace 0 - 10 Phoenix.

The second period started as the first with the Phoenix players trying to get their game going and it took nearly three mins before the goals again started to flow. Phoenix scored shorthanded to get the scoreboard moving again and the pattern of the first period was pretty much repeated. Late in the session, Coventry were visibly flagging, so much so they shipped four goals in the final two minutes even when a couple of Phoenix players were in the pen box. Phoenix play pulled the Coventry team all over the place and they tired letting in four goals in the last two mins.

2nd period - Coventry Menace 0 - 21 Phoenix.

The thrid period was played on a running clock, but it took only one minute for Phoenix to register their 22nd goal. With Phoenix short-shifting their two lines, the goals flowed again with with a further ten added before the final hooter sounded to end the Menace misery.

Final Score - Coventry Menace 0 - 32 Phoenix.

A Phoenix spokesperson noted, "Both mentally and physically it was always going to be difficult for the players to reach the standard of play showed at Bradford last week. However, you can only play the opposition in front of you and it was a job well done."
