The Phoenix Flies West

Wednesday, 6th February 2008

The Manchester Phoenix Junior club's second tour to Canada gets underway this coming weekend. The squad of twelve leaves for Central Ontario with a busy schedule which will take in five training sessions and six matches over six consecutive days.

'Yes it's a gruelling timetable, but the players lap up the excitement of the whole adventure' says a club spokesperson. 'From our base in Orillia, North of Toronto, they'll be practising at a rink in Coldwater and playing challenge matches against teams in Orillia, Bala, Thornton, Alliston, Bradford and Innisfil. It's a chance for our squad to learn more about a completely different ice hockey environment, somewhere their favourite sport isn't just a minority interest, but a national sport played by almost everyone. To give you a taste of just how different it all is, two towns we visit have each had two new rinks built since last year's trip and a nearby car factory has four ice pads of its own!'

The squad, pictured here, has been assembled from players in four of the Phoenix squads. We wish them the best of luck for a tremendous tour.
