Blackburn Hawks 1 - 6 Manchester Phoenix
Last Saturday saw the Manchester Phoenix Under-14 squad dominate their local rivals from the Blackburn Hawks with an emphatic 6-1 victory on the road.
The Phoenix squad burst out of the opening face-off to register their first goal after just 15 seconds, Lily Greaves scoring unassisted before the crowd had even taken their seats. The home side settled despite their nervy start and drew level in the 8th minute. But, the home sides goal served only to spark the Phoenix back into action and within 40 seconds, the visitors were back in front, Sheldon Cassidy netted unassisted. Both teams squandered powerplay opportunities and at the first break, Phoenix led by the odd goal in three.
The second period began badly for the Phoenix as James Soens was assessed a 2+10 minute penalty for Crosschecking, but the loss of a player on a long penalty didn't deter the visitors. The 27th minute saw Thomas Wilson neatly set up Jonathan Parker for the third goal and it soon became 4-1 as Max Howard scored unassisted just past the half-hour mark. With less than seven minutes remaining in this 40-minute match, Phoenix Michael Sergienko converted a penalty shot to put the result beyond doubt, and even after the visitors drew two further penalties, the home side could not reduce the arrears. The final minute saw the Phoenix youngsters complete a crushing victory over their near neighbours as max Howard set up Sergienko for his second of the game.
A delighted Phoenix spokeslady noted, "what a way for the team to get their first win of the season, they all played really well together as a team and dominated the Hawks right from the start."
