Phoenix 6 - 7 Newcastle
A first period interrupted by a succession of minor penalties, mostly against the home side, disrupted the gameplan and played into the hands of the Vipers youngsters. The session saw just one goal and it went to the visitors in the eighth minute, Hall the scorer.
The Vipers doubled their lead with almost six minutes of the second period played, Hall assisting as Robinson netted. However, this marker merely kick-started the home side and within a minute, the game was tied at 2-2 as Sheldon Cassidy scored two unassisted solo efforts. The Vipers though responded well, Robinson netting his second of the game just twenty seconds later to restore the visitors lead and Mannala added a powerplay marker in the 24th minute with James Soens in the penalty box for Tripping. All in all, an exciting period with the game well poised after thirty minutes.
Once again, the third period saw Newcastle score first, Smedley unassisted giving the Geordies a second two-goal advantage in the game. Phoenix gradually put the visitors under increasing pressure and their reward came with just over five minutes to play as Thomas Wilson scored assisted by Michael Sergienko. Mannala though took a pass from Hall to again give the Vipers a two-goal margin before the Phoenix youngsters really turned up the heat. Alex Harrison reduced the arrears assisted by Thomas Wilson and just 18 seconds later, Thomas added his second of the game assisted by Sheldon Cassidy and Lily Greaves. The Vipers again responded, Hall assisting Robinson, before Hall drew a 10-minute Misconduct penalty. The final action of an enthralling game saw Thomas Wilson complete his personal hat trick with the games final, unassisted, goal.
