Grimsby Redwings 5 - 5 Manchester Phoenix
A quick start by the home side saw them take the lead inside three minutes, Tice the scorer, but the Phoenix needed less than 30 seconds to equalise, Joshua Hartsorn netting on an assist from Sophie Reeks. Phoenix took a seventh minute lead as Max Howard fed Michael Sergienko and he made no mistake. The home side are obviously more accustomed to the tight confines of the small Grimsby rink and by the first interval, they'd regained the upper hand on goals from Jones in the ninth minute and Barwood in the 12th. Phoenix needed to kill two penalties late in the session to avoid a heavier scoreline.
The second period was surprisingly void of goals despite the home side dominating the play and outshooting the Phoenix youngsters 20 to 7 in the session. Joe Murphy in the Phoenix goal was in excellent form and his showing was to be the foundation the team would build upon in the final period.
Disappointingly, it was the Redwings who scored first in the final period through Byatt to open up a two-goal margin and Phoenix had to kill another penalty before reducing the arrears again when Josh Hartsorn bagged his second of the game in the 38th minute. The Phoenix celebration was shortlived though as Grimsby needed just 16 seconds to re-establish their two-goal lead, Yorston the scorer. Time was now becoming a factor and the game reached the final 90 seconds with Phoenix still trailing by two. But, a tremendous effort saw Max Howard set up Michael Sergienko with just over a minute to play and incredibly, Sergienko completed a stunning hat-trick with less than thirty seconds to play to tie the score at five goals apiece.
A Junior Club spokesperson noted, "The U-12's showed great determination that evening, after a long journey there and a tough home game with top-of-the-league, Blackburn Hawks the previous day, these youngsters showed their strength and perseverence which paid off with a long awaited point for the league table."
