Newcastle Vipers 1 - 7 Manchester Phoenix

The Phoenix Under-12 squad finally got their first win of the season and in some style, thrashing the Vipers out of sight on their own ice!

The Phoenix youngsters made a mockery of the long journey to Tyneside as straight from the first face-off, they tore into the Vipers as though their lives depended on it. Michael Sergienko opened the scoring in the fifth minute assisted by James Soens and it was soon two-nil when Max Howard scored assisted by Conor Howard and Leon Shaw. The Vipers were rattled and had to work hard to kill a Tripping penalty on Dixon, but the respite was shortlived as Michael Sergienko bagged his second of the game in the tenth minute with help from James Soens and Reagan Corbin.

The second period saw further domination by the Phoenix as they increased their lead in the 17th minute, James Soens netting assisted by Sergienko. Both sides killed penalties as the flow of goals dried up temporarily, but the Phoenix youngsters were confident and appeared as though they could score at will should the need arise.

Just over five minutes into the final period, Vipers Dixon was penalised and Michael Sergienko needed no better invitation to complete his hat-trick with a superb unassisted powerplay goal thirty seconds later. Phoenix killed another penalty called on James Soens before Oliver Gillespie scored, assisted by Max Howard. Newcastle's Mannala finally got the home side on the scoreboard, assisted by Hellens and Roberts in the 41st minute, but that only stung the Phoenix into instant retaliation as a shot from Sergienko came back off the pipework and James Soens was in the perfect place to crash home the rebound for his second of the game to end the scoring and secure the teams first victory of the season.

A delighted Junior Club spokeslady beamed, "These youngsters had a gruelling 5am start and long journey up to the North East for a 10:00am face off! Despite the early start the team were full of energy and good spirit which paid off and they gladly returned home later that day with a victory and another two points for the league table! A great game with a noisy and encouraging crowd of supporters!"
