Manchester Phoenix U-12 5 - 2 Grimsby Redwings U-12
Last Saturday's U-12 game didn't exactly begin in auspicious fashion as the visiting Redwings stole the first period with two early goals inside six minutes, the first from Yorston with Lyons adding the second courtesy on an assist from Byatt. The Phoenix just weren't clicking in the opening session and welcomed the first interval having survived a Grimsby powerplay when James Soens was penalised for Bodychecking.
The second period saw a complete reversal of fortunes as the home side began to find more rhythm and put the visitors defence under increasing pressure. The arrears were reduced less than three minutes into the session as Michael Sergienko bagged the first of what was to become a personal four-goal haul that would shoot the Redwings down. Having scored, Sergienko then went to the penalty box for Bobychecking. Grimsby again failed to make the most of the man advantage as did the Phoenix when Lyons was binned for Tripping. Sergienko was really in the thick of things and after serving his second Bodychecking penalty, he levelled the scores just past the 28-minute mark, assisted by James Soens.
With the game neatly poised after two periods Grimsby, not being used to the bigger ice surface, were expected to tire and Phoenix take advantage. But Phoenix didn't wait for fatigue to set in, taking just 20 seconds for the impressive Soens to take a pass from Conor Howard to edge them in front. Howard was again the provider as Sergienko completed his hat-trick just two and a half minutes later and he was to make if four and round off the 5-2 victory inside a further two minutes, converting a fee from Charlie Ratcliffe. Sergienko and Soens both troubled the penalty box attendants again before the final hooter and an excellent victory for the Under-12 squad.
A Phoenix spokeslady noted, "A home win and a well deserved great start to the new year! This game displayed the players improvement so far this season and showed how well they are pulling together as a team, full of good spirit and determination."
