Coventry 0 - 10 Manchester
A magnificent road trip for the Phoenix Under-12s as they made they way down the M6 in hope and returned home in raptures after shutting out the home side with a stunning display. Ace goal poacher Michael Sergienko got the scoreboard moving in just the fourth minute finishing a pass from Leon Shaw. Phoenix went shorthanded in the seventh minute as Reagan Corbin was penalised for High Sticking, but Sergienko made it two-nil with an unassisted shorthanded marker half way through the penalty. Confidence was growing and when James Soens made it three with another unassisted goal, the writing was on the wall for a memorable day out. Coventry worked hard to kill off a Tripping penalty on Cooper, but they were powerless to prevent Sergienko from completing his hat-trick - on a pass from James Soens - before adding his fourth of the period, unassisted to make it a 0-5 score line at the interval.
With the game being played over two 20-minute periods, Coventry were hoping for better in the second session, but some stalwart defensive work from Sam Penner and Billy Brewer kept the home forwards at bay giving goalie Joe Murphy little more than a spectators role. Another Phoenix player who impressed was Ethan Cassidy making his debut for the Under-12s and not disgracing himself in the process. After the visitors had killed a penalty on Max Howard, they went back on the offensive, determined to add to their impressive first period tally. Leon Shaw made it six in the 33rd minute with an assist to Will Thomas and barely 24 seconds later, Sophie Reeks showed her style by making it seven unassisted. Coventry were all at sea and the Phoenix were revelling in the freedom the home defence was affording them. Less than a minute later, Sergienko bagged his fifth and the Phoenix eighth goal, this time assisted by Oliver Gillespie and he needed only another 40 seconds to notch his sixth of the game and make it 9-0 for the team. Phoenix ended the day in fine style, reaching the double-figure mark courtesy of Max Howard and the helper credited to Reagan Corbin.
An elated Phoenix spokeslady gushed, "The players showed off their abilities and for that, they were rewarded with a superb victory! The overall game and scoreline certainly gave the rowdy crowd something to shout about especially as netminder Joe Murphy was able to celebrate his first shutout!!"
