Phoenix U-12s 8 - 3 Newcastle Vipers U-12s
The Phoenix Under-12 squad brought the curtain down on their home games campaign with a resounding victory over their Geordie counterparts. The home side got away to a flying start as they exploded from the blocks with a four-goal salvo in a little over three minutes, including a hat-trick from Michael Sergienko. The opening goal came just 52 seconds after the opening face-off, Sergienko netting the first of his treble to set the scoreboard ticking over. Max Howard made it two-nil at 3.01, the first of three goals in an amazing and frenetic 15-second spell. The crowd had barely drawn breath when seven seconds later, Sergienko made it three-nil with his second before completing his hat-trick just another eight seconds later with the crowd now totally stunned. Amazingly, the Vipers managed to withstand the Phoenix offense for the remainder of the first period to trail by just four at the first interval.
Unlike the opening 15 minutes, the second period was over five minutes old before the scorer was troubled again and this time it the Vipers opening their account, Dixon netting assisted by Connelly. Phoenix responded just over a minute later as Josh Hartson bagged the first of hid brace, adding his second in the 24th minute. Reagan Cordin added a seventh for the home side in the 26th minute and the eighth arrived bang on the half-hour mark and the end of the period as Sergienko bagged his fourth of the game.
With the outcome of the game beyond any reasonable doubt, the third session was something of an anti-climax as the Phoenix youngsters eased off the gas and the Vipers looked to restore some degree of self-confidence if they could reduce the arrears. The visitors had to kill off Slashing and Elbows penalties against Patterson and Barnes respectively before Nilsen added their second marker in the 35th minute. Phoenix were then called upon to show their ability to kill penalties as James Soens was binned for Bodychecking. Sophie reeks and Dixon of the Vipers both sat out two-minute minors as the teams played 4-on-4, but when Max Howard was penalised for Hooking in the 43rd minute, Hellens scored the Vipers third marker on the resulting powerplay.
A Phoenix Junior club spokeslady commented, "It was great to win our last home game of the season and it gave the youngsters confidence and determination to play their final away game the following day against league table toppers, Blackburn Hawks. Sadly, a final score on Sunday of 9-2 showed that the Hawks made the most of their home advantage. all in all, it's been a terrific season and the players can't wait for next season to begin such is their enthusiasm."
