Early rise doesn’t suit the Phoenix!

Tuesday, 15th November 2011

5:30am alarm calls were the order of the day last Sunday as the Phoenix made the long journey to face Whitley Bay for a 12:30pm face off.

When the two teams clashed in Manchester in October Whitley Bay were victorious 9 – 4, leaving Phoenix looking for revenge on the return leg.

The early start clearly took its toll on the Phoenix as Whitley Bay stormed into an early lead. Within 6 minutes the score was 3 – 0 and the writing was clearly on the wall. By the end of the first period the score was 7 – 0 and the Phoenix were really up against it!

Despite the immense early pressure, the Phoenix battled on with huge efforts across the team. In goal, Harry Brown, made countless excellent saves and heroic efforts by the whole team left them somewhat battered and bruised. Sterling defensive efforts were also witnessed particularly on the third line which was up against a tremendously strong Whitley bay third line.

Offensively, opportunities were limited and whilst the official score line was recorded as 8-0, the Phoenix did score mid way through the second period when Elliot Hunt found the net, earning him MVP for the day. The goal prompted huge vocal support from the Phoenix visiting supporters who urged the young team on.

At the end of the day, Whitley Bay came out comfortable winners but the Phoenix can be proud of another excellent team effort.

As ever, it was smiling faces all round on the long journey home with the Phoenix displaying great team spirit and camaraderie.
