Manchester Phoenix U18 vs Whitley Bay U18

Monday, 21st November 2011

Saturday 19th November 2011

The 1st period started with a penalty for both sides, then almost the perfect start after 1.30 for Phoenix as Jared`s shot rifled into the net only to be disallowed due to offside, the home fans celebrations cut short.

The away side dominated possession for the next few minutes and but for some fine netminding by Andy Underwood, Phoenix would have been behind.

The first goal to Whitley Bay came after 8.40 followed on 12.04 by number 2, Phoenix were hanging on at the moment and creating very little offensively. The first period ended with the away side in control and a lacklustre Phoenix start to the game with very few scoring opportunities.

The team talk at the first break obviously had an affect because Phoenix came out much more positively at the start of the 2nd period, a Whitley penalty followed, but unfortunately, Phoenix didn’t manage to get a single shot in this power play.

After 34.15 the home fans finally had something to cheer as Jared Dickinson rifled an unstoppable shot into the net assisted by Chris Fox, suddenly Phoenix were back in the game at 1-2.

The game then got very scrappy with further penalties exchanged by both sides, but the away side had the better of possession and shots but matched more evenly in this period by Phoenix.

The turning point of the game was the next 12 seconds, with 2 seconds of the period remaining, Jared rifled another shot into the top corner, it bounced out and wasn’t given, it looked a goal from the stands but the score at the end of the 2nd period remained 1-2.

At the start of the 3rd period, after 4 seconds a very harsh penalty was given against Phoenix for what appeared to be a fair hit, 6 seconds later from the ensuing face-off Whitley had scored again to make it 1-3, a crazy few seconds had changed the game. Phoenix were now chasing the game again, tiredness became a factor and we turned the puck over too much in the final period, the away side scored again after 43.43 to make it 1-4 on a 4 v 4 penalty for both sides. Another Whitley penalty followed which again we managed no shots on power play.

The final goal to Whitley came on 57.29 on a Phoenix power play for a final score of Phoenix 1 Whitley 5.

The man of the match went to Scott Robson

The shots were Phoenix 18 Whitley 56
