PHOENIX U14s 7 BLACKBURN HAWKS 1
After their last close encounter the Phoenix were looking forward to playing the Hawks on home ice and they didn’t waste the opportunity. With the puck only being on the ice for less than a minute the Phoenix made the most of a power play when Max Broadhurst combining with Matty Barlow hit the back of the Hawks net to make it 1-nil. A minute later Max Broadhurst found himself featuring on the score sheet again with a single handed effort on goal which found its way pass the Hawks keeper, 2-nil. Both penalty boxes became busy as each team felt the wrath of the ref’s whistle but 30 seconds from the end of the third Matty Barlow, assisted by Max Howard made it 3-nil.
With the 3 goal cushion, the Phoenix took the opportunity to ice some of their younger players in the 2nd period and they didn’t disappoint as Leon Shaw, assisted by Matty Barlow whipped the puck between the pipes, 4-0. The play was going all Phoenix’s way when the Hawks caught them on the brake, Phoenix netminder Joe Murphy made a fantastic one on one save but the Hawks pulled one back on the rebound, 4-1.
At the start of the 3rd period the Phoenix picked up where they left off as Anders Bosman, assisted by Max Broadhurst made it 5-1. Not long after Matty Barlow, assisted by George Burgess made it 6-1 by chipping the puck past the Hawks keeper. Once again the ref’s whistle became busy and both teams received consecutive penalties for various infringements. The Phoenix’s defence men of Callan Kinsella, James Soens, Nathan King and Conor Howard rose to the challenge and shut the Hawks down on their power plays. In the latter throws of the game It was the Phoenix who made the most of a power play when Matty Barlow finished off the Phoenix scoring with a single handed effort goal, 7-1.
