Phoenix swoop secures top goalie

Head coach Rick Brebant has completed a key piece of squad building jigsaw with the signing of top goalie Jayme Platt from North America’s East Coast Hockey League.

Twenty-five year old Jayme Platt hails from Redmond in Washington State and led the Greenville Grrrowl to the ECHL Playoff championship two seasons ago, recording a 92% save percentage in the process. Last season he started with Greenville before moving to the Dayton Bombers and finished the season in the American Hockey League with a handful of games for the Lowell Lock Monsters.

Brebant noted, “Goalies have been at a premium this summer and for a while, there really was not a lot out there. Then we heard that Jayme might be available and we put our research machinery into top gear, as we knew other clubs would also be in the hunt. The first reports were encouraging and then as we spoke to more and more people in North America, we knew we were on the right track.”

Currently training in New Jersey Jayme Platt commented, “I had a couple of teams in the UK contact me, but these guys in Manchester have been very persuasive. I know players who have already signed with the Phoenix and a good friend, Ryan Stewart, told me Manchester was the place to play, so I’m really looking forward to getting over there. This will be my first experience of Europe and a whole bunch of people have told me I will like it there – I’m still in the US, but feel at home in Manchester already.”

Brebant added further, “At around six foot and 175lbs, Jayme has the perfect build for a netminder and right through his career has posted save percentages better than 90% and he led the East Coast in wins during his championship year. Last season in Lowell Lock in his first game in the AHL, he set a franchise record of 56 saves in one game, so we are very happy at securing his signature. With just two more players to finalise, we are almost complete - the fans can look forward to a great season of Phoenix hockey.”
