Boothroyd handed the Phoenix captaincy

Thursday, 24th September 2009

Great Britain international defenceman Luke Boothroyd has been appointed the new captain of the Manchester Phoenix by player/coach Tony Hand.

Speaking about the decision Hand commented, "Luke has impressed me greatly since he joined the club last season and he's an ideal candidate to wear the C. He's not overly vocal in the room, preferring to let his actions on the ice speak for him. He's a very steady and reliable player and that stands out in him. We know what we're going to get from him every time he laces up his skates and that sets the tone for others to follow."

"I was a little surprised, but pleasantly so when Tony approached me," remarked Yorkshire born Boothroyd. "You always hear players talk about being honoured to be a team captain and I'm not going to buck that trend. I enjoy being a part of this club and team, and that will make this very, very special for me. Like Tony says, I'm not the greatest of talkers in the room, but I train hard and work hard every shift, every game and I'd like to think my actions speak louder than words."

Asked if he'd ever worn the C earlier in his career, Boothroyd grimaced before saying, "I wish you hadn't asked that. Playing for the Northern Conference a few years back, I was made captain and we went five games without a goal and that includes losing a penalty shootout without scoring one. I'm just hoping that lightning doesn't strike twice."

Phoenix have two games this coming weekend as they travel to the Sheffield Scimitars on Saturday for a 7.30pm face-off before a 5.30pm face-off on Sunday when the Milton Keynes Lightning are the visitors to the Altrincham Ice Dome.
