Hand inks Greg Wood for second term

Tuesday, 16th February 2010

Manchester Phoenix player coach has made his second signing for the 2010-11 season with Greg Wood agreeing to a second term with the club.

Like captain Luke Boothroyd, Greg Wood is another quietly spoken Yorkshireman and Tony Hand has been impressed with his application and work ethic throughout the current campaign.

"Paul Thompson at the Coventry Blaze told me I would not be disappointed with Woody as he gives everything every time he hits the ice. Thommo wasn't wrong and Greg has been a pleasure to work with so much so that I was keen to ask him to stay."

"Greg is another extremely low maintenance player, I don't have to keep telling him what to do or when to do it, he knows what's required and he gets on with the job. Whether it's gym work or on the ice, Greg never gives anything less than his best. If I can get him to improve his scoring rate, we'll have one heck of a player on our team again next year."

Originally from Sheffield, 23-year old Greg Wood has scored ten goals and 23 assists in his first season with the Phoenix. A Junior Great Britain international, Greg moved to Manchester for regular ice time after three seasons in the Elite League split between Basingstoke and Coventry. Not the tallest at 5ft 9ins, the right shot forward is an all-action forward intent on improving ever time he takes to the ice.

"I've really enjoyed this season and was delighted when Tony talked with me about re-signing with the team. We've got a good set-up here and the club does everything it can to give us the opportunity to perform. The fans have been terrific and the support they give us makes it all the harder if we don't give them the results we all want."

"Tony has talked to me already about trying to improve my goalscoring and naturally, I'm keen to score more, but as long as the team wins that's the main thing. I enjoy scoring, all players do, but it gives me as much pleasure knowing I've worked hard and helped the overall effort."
