Nap happy Phoenix as Devils are routed

Sunday, 19th October 2003

Manchester Phoenix ended their goal drought in fine style on Sunday night with a convincing victory over the high-flying Cardiff Devils.

Man of the Match Mike Morin weighed in with a brace of goals and assisted on the other three as he rolled back the years with a scintillating all-action performance.

And it could have been more as but for a sterling show in the visitors goal by Eoin McInerney, the Phoenix could have reached double figures as the frustration that has dogged their last three games was well and truly exorcised. David Kozier got the ball rolling with an 11th minute powerplay strike and Mike Lankshear blasted a sweet one-timer in the 37th before Morin bagged his first on 39 minutes. Captain George Awada restored a two-goal Phoenix advantage after the Devils got two on the powerplay and Morin sealed a great win with a calm empty-netter at 58.56.

A pleased Phoenix head coach Rick Brebant commented, “I’ve known all along that we had goals in us, it was just a matter of when they would come. It’s been frustrating waiting as we’ve played some good hockey. Tonight, we got the breaks and I though we played very well indeed. David Kozier and Shinny (Shin Larsson-Yahata) were excellent tonight and again, my British players did themselves proud.”

Brebant advised that he expects to include an additional player on Tuesday when he takes the team to Nottingham for a 7.30pm face-off with the Panthers.
