Jekyll and Hyde Phoenix hand Bison road win

Monday, 27th October 2003

All the good work of Saturdays’ win in Sheffield was undone on Sunday as a Jekyll and Hyde performance by the Manchester Phoenix allowed the Basingstoke Bison to take away two valuable points from the MEN Arena.

Even a first goal for the club by local player Brian Worrall failed to lighten the mood as the Phoenix failed to make the most of their territorial advantage and out shooting the visitors 41-24.

Two second period defensive lapses gifted Joe Ciccarello and Steve Moria goals for Basingstoke as they completed the four-point weekend that the Phoenix and their fans were looking forward to.

Phoenix coach Rick Brebant commented, “I’m very, very disappointed and frustrated at the performance tonight. Where we were good on Saturday, we were poor tonight and I apologise to our fans for the display they saw tonight. We have to find a way to play two solid games each weekend or we will not challenge for the honours. Contending teams go on winning streaks, right now we win one, lose one and that is not how honours are achieved.”

He continued, “we all make mistakes, but we have to start learning from them. We warned the players about the way we expected the Bison to play and we didn’t adapt sufficiently. We created a lot of chances but, didn’t pressure them hard enough in front of the net. They played their game plan very well and their bus ride home to Hampshire will be easier than my five-minute car ride home.”
