Woe in Wiltshire as Phoenix Fall to the Wildcats

Sunday, 11th January 2015

Swindon Wildcats 4 Manchester Phoenix 2

Phoenix scorers: Frantisek Bakrlik and Robin Kovar

Swindon made a bright start and took the lead on 1.55 with a power play goal. Johan Burlin was assessed a holding call after 1.33 and Jonas Hoog scored, sending his shot over Declan Ryan’s shoulder. The home side doubled their lead when Aaron Nell scored on 8.28 and made it three with five minutes left in the period with a Jan Kostal powerplay goal: Frankie Bakrlik in the box on a hooking call. The period ended with no further scoring and Phoenix with a mountain to climb.

The visitors pulled a goal back on 24.38 when Frankie Bakrlik sent the puck through Stevie Lyle’s five hole to make it 3-1. Phoenix lost Joe Graham with a shoulder injury when he was boarded by Alex Symonds, resulting in the Swindon player receiving a game penalty and Joe was taken to hospital for checks. There were no more goals in the second period which saw both netminders put in great performances to keep the score at 3-1.

Phoenix gave themselves hope with 10 minutes left when Robin Kovar scored from close in but lost a 4th less than a minute later when a poor line change sent Aaron Nell away and he scored to make it 4-2. That was it for the scoring and the points stayed in the West Country

Phoenix take on league leaders Telford Tigers on Sunday with the usual 17:30 face off.
