Menace makes debut at Old Trafford cricket ground

Thursday, 16th July 2015

Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Club's mascot "The Menace", made its debut in the sports mascot race during Lancashire's 20/20 Blast match at Emirates Old Trafford last night.

A hearty band of Phoenix fans made their way on a glorious Wednesday evening to watch Lancashire Lightning play Nottinghamshire Outlaws. And, of course, they were there to cheer on their favourite mascot in the big race!

Menace, AKA Kayleigh Hewitt, lined up against mascots from various local sports teams, including Sale Sharks, Bolton Wanderers, and Blackpool Town in a fun relay.

As always, some skulduggery was in evidence as the Menace's partner was ruthlessly taken out by a shark, losing a shoe in the process. Sadly, that left Menace just too much to do to win the contest.

Menace, however, typified the Phoenix resilience and will to win, by recovering and finishing strongly - only to be pipped at the line by the Blackpool mascot.

The vocal Phoenix support howled their derision, as the underhand tactics - definitely interference in their own sport of ice hockey - went unpunished. But on her return to the stands, Menace still received a huge ovation.

Following the contest, Kayleigh said: "I was a bit nervous at the start but the contestants were a great group and I thought we were a bit unlucky not to win. This was my first ever mascot race and I will be ready for any tactics next time."

Mags Pullen, who organised Menace's participation in the event, added: "We had a great night, unfortunately both the Menace and Lancashire finished second, but it was good to meet up with fellow fans in the close season.

"Thanks to my other half Dave, Sandra and Russell Hewitt, Lyndsay Dawn Easterby, David Kinsey, Stuart Kilburn, Nicola Matthews Yvonne Oates, Cath Freeman, Chelle O'Grady, Peter Bradbury and Jim Piper for attending and supporting the Menace."
