Penalty calls cost Phoenix in Telford

Saturday, 2nd January 2016

Manchester Phoenix travelled to Telford for the second time in the league this season, welcoming back Stanislav Gron and James Archer, and new signing Martin Baranek.

Telford created most of the early chances, and Jason Silverthorn was denied by the post, before Ben Wood went off the ice with a shoulder injury.  Max Birbraer then grabbed the only goal of the first period at 16:28 for Telford when he fired home.

Phoenix were boosted by the return of Ben Wood for the second period, and created a number of opportunities with both Michal Satek and Baranek denied by Sam Gospel in the Telford net.  Phoenix made their dominance count when Satek converted a Robin Kovar pass on the Powerplay at 31:53 before Baranek claimed a debut goal following a great pass from James Archer at 35:04, as the visitors ended the period 2-1 in front.

Penalties continued to be awarded to both sides, and Telford capitalised on a debatable two man advantage through Silverthorn at 48:27.  Another penalty against the Phoenix allowed Peter Szabo to give Telford the lead at 50:19, and yet another allowed Rick Plant to make it 4-2 at 53:15.  Once Phoenix returned to five skaters, James Archer pulled a goal back at 54:31 after being set up by Kovar but Phoenix ran out of time as the game ended 4-3.

Phoenix host the Hull Pirates in Deeside tomorrow night with a 6:30pm face-off.
