Matt Rich delight at Phoenix return

Friday, 13th April 2007

Manchester Phoenix Director of Hockey Tony Hand has completed his second re-signing of the close season as fellow Scot Matt Rich will wear a Phoenix uniform from next September.

The 19-year old originally from Glasgow joined the Phoenix in October 2006 after starting the season with the Newcastle Vipers. But when both clubs made roster changes, the chance to link up with Tony Hand under whom he played with the Edinburgh Capitals came up was too good for Rich to miss out on and he didn’t hesitate to sign for the Phoenix.

Hand, currently on duty with the GB National Team preparing for the World Championships in Slovenia noted, "Matt Rich is still a young player and still has a lot to learn. But, he is very sensible, a good listener and has a work ethic to be proud of. He did a very good job for us this season and I’m confident he’ll continue to improve next season."

Speaking from his Glasgow home, Matt Rich commented, "There was absolutely no doubt in my mind where I wanted to sign this summer, I wanted to return to Manchester."

He added, “It was a great club to be a part of last season despite everything we went through and we were all made to feel so much at home. So, knowing he is busy with the GB team, I was delighted to talk to Tony about coming back and I’m already excited for next season. I know what Tony wants from me and I’ll work as hard as I can to fill that role.”
