Home ice venue deal confirmed

Tuesday, 1st July 2003

Tuesday July 1st sees a momentous milestone in the short history of the Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Club as Managing Director Neil Morris and MEN Arena General Manager John Knight sign the contract that sees top-flight ice hockey return to city centre Manchester.

The two parties shook hands back in May on an outline agreement for SMG Europe to host Phoenix hockey and this afternoons’ signing ceremony confirms that the new team will play its home games in the magnificent MEN Arena.

Phoenix MD Morris stated, “This is a great moment for the club. To be able to play our home games in the best indoor venue in Britain, if not Europe, is an enormous boost to our momentum. Many thousands of fans have watched hockey previously in the arena and we would love to see those fans back as the Phoenix embark on their first season.”

He continued, “Hockey is fast, exciting, hard-hitting and most of all, entertaining. I am confident that the team, head coach, Rick Brebant is constructing will bring all those elements together in the playing roster of the Manchester Phoenix. Our aim is to combine entertainment with a winning team and all in an environment that our fans, corporate partners, advertisers and sponsors will appreciate as being second to none. This agreement with SMG is exactly the platform we desired to launch the Phoenix.”
