Operation "Ogureshnikov"

Saturday, 19th April 2008

At 4pm British time Team GB take on Kazakhstan knowing that a win against the highest world ranked team at the Championships would secure a Silver Medal.

"It's a tough ask," said Coach Paul Thompson "but why not? We are playing well, we have nothing to lose having already gained more points than we did at last years event, we have improved our own world ranking and are enjoying our time playing with confidence.

"We have watched Kazakhstan play Austria tonight and go down just 4-3, I thought Kazakhstan played very well from goalie out, they are a very good team, but then again over the week we have proved to be no pushover either. Sergey Ogureshnikov is an outstanding goalie and we will need to be clinical in front of goal. Yesterday against Holland we took the game to another outstanding netminder and beat him, so we know we have the tools for the job. Beat Ogureshnikov and we are right in there.

"This is our play off final, the last game of the year, so lets role the dice, play to our strengths, keep our discipline and if that happens I am telling you we can beat this Kazakhstan team. We all need to play our best game, that's the efforts its going to take, but I am confident we will bring our A game to play."

Should GB beat Kazakhstan this afternoon in regulation time they will win a silver medal if Austria beat Poland in regulation. GB will take a Bronze medal if Austria beat Poland in over time or if Poland beat Austria.
