Hewitt in Phoenix seventh heaven

Monday, 1st September 2003

Manchester born and bred forward Jason Hewitt today becomes the seventh player from the Northwest region to sign for the Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Club.

Jason, who celebrated his 20th birthday only last week, is another product of the junior development system at the former Altrincham Aces club. He began playing hockey a little over five years ago and quickly progressed through the junior levels breaking into the Aces senior squad in 2001. Last season, he was a high-scoring forward as the Aces finished runners-up in the English National League and narrowly missed out on Playoff success finishing runners up to Basingstoke.

Phoenix coach Rick Brebant commented, “we are determined to give the local players every opportunity to stake their claim for a regular place on the team roster. With Jason signing, we now have seven local players to compliment our import signings. Jason and the others will benefit enormously from training on a regular basis with the imports and I will be working with him to further develop his skills to meet the higher level.”

On signing for the Phoenix Jason Hewitt said, “Since I started playing hockey, I’ve always wanted to play at as high a level as possible. Last season was great, now this season I’m looking to take my game to a new level and I’m really excited about the chance Rick and the Phoenix are giving me, it’s great to be a part of it.”

In other signing news, Brebant is currently negotiating with a highly skilled and very experienced forward and hopes to conclude contract talks later this week. He said, “I cannot give too much away at this stage as I don’t want other teams alerted to this players availability. I’m making an offer to his agent and the signs are that it will be accepted, but until I see the signature come through the fax, I’m holding my breath.”
