War of the Roses 2012-2013

Tuesday, 31st July 2012

It’s that time again. Time for the reds and the whites to put on the war paint (or is it put on the foil?) and play for the magnificent War of the Roses Trophy.

This season’s war of attrition will start at Ice Sheffield on Thursday 6thSeptember (Face off to be confirmed) and the return is at the Ice Dome on Sunday 9th September with the usual 17:30 face off.

Phoenix have been dominant in the pre-season match-ups but the Steeldogs gave them a real battle last season. The first leg finished with an exciting 3-3 draw in Sheffield with Phoenix coming back from 3-0 down with goals from Martin Cingel, Slava Koulikov and Stephen Wallace.

In the second leg at the Dome, it was Phoenix’s turn to take a three goal lead with scores from Slava Koulikov, Juraj Faith and Stephen Wallace. Steeldogs pulled a goal back in the third through Chris Sykes but Jaroslav Spelda scored an empty netter to ensure Phoenix retained the trophy for the 3rd time in succession.

Steeldogs had a great season last time out and games against Phoenix were no longer foregone conclusions and there is no reason to doubt it will be the same this coming season.

Coach Hand commented: “There is now a good competitive rivalry between the teams and the games will be a good work out for both teams and myself and Andre. There is always a bit of bite and the fans turn out in big numbers. I have no doubt it will be another classic encounter to kick off the new season.”

With ex-Phoenix players Ben Morgan, Pasha Gomeniuk and Greg Wood still donning the Steeldogs’ colours, we are again assured of a tough competitive game.
