Phoenix first signing for 2015/16

Wednesday, 15th April 2015

Manchester Phoenix have signed netminder Stephen Fone, as the countdown begins to the new English Premier League campaign.

The 27-year-old was an integral part of the Phoenix squad that reached the play-off finals and British Challenge Cup final last season.

He was also a member of the side that won the EPL title in 2014, and is regarded as one of the finest British netminders in the country.

Phoenix Head Coach Tony Hand was quick to snap up Fone, who has become a firm favourite with the Manchester faithful.

He said: “Stephen was one of the first names on my retained list when I sat down with owner Neil Morris last week. He works hard and has won a lot of games for us over the last six seasons.

“His input, both on the ice and in the dressing room, has proved invaluable. Bringing him back really was a no-brainer and I expect our fans will feel the same way.

“Stephen’s skills and experience are something that can easily be passed onto our younger players during junior sessions.”

Fone slots into a Phoenix squad that will be tasked with regaining the league title they relinquished at the hands of Telford Tigers.

Hand added: “My main target for next season is to win back the league title. With the players we are bringing in, this team will be competitive at the top of the EPL table.

“It will be my first year as a full-time coach, after I retired from playing a few weeks ago. I want to mark the next part of my career with a championship.”
