Menace makes bid for mascot glory

Monday, 13th July 2015

Phoenix mascot The Menace will join his counterparts from across the country at Emirates Old Trafford cricket ground on Wednesday evening.

The 6ft furry rascal will compete in the first North West Mascot Derby, during Lancashire Lightning's Nationwide 20/20 Blast game with Nottinghamshire Outlaws.

Mascots from a host of high-profile clubs, including Blackpool FC, Bolton FC, Wigan Warriors and Sale Sharks will take to the track during the interval.

Phoenix owner, Neil Morris, is predicting a close-run encounter for the club's famous mascot.

He said: "The Menace is a great ambassador for this club, and has been a visible presence over many years. He is very much part of the team.

"The other mascots are, however, incredibly fit and I expect that some of them are full-time professionals. The Menace will have his work cut out, but I predict he will finish in the top three, if not in first place."

Fans can sponsor Menace's bid for glory, with all proceeds going to the Manchester Phoenix Community Sports Foundation. For more information, go to: http://www.sponsorme.co.uk/margaretpullen/sports-mascot-derby.aspx.

The mascot race will be based on the outfield, and forms part of the entertainment during Lancashire's limited-overs encounter.

Menace's invitation was further proof of the high-regard that other major sporting venues in Manchester hold The Phoenix.

"Our fans have been wonderful this summer and like me, they can't wait for the ice hockey season to begin in Deeside," Mr Morris added.

"Wednesday night's race will be a great way to celebrate the summer in a relaxed environment. It is heartening to know that major sporting venues like Emirates Old Trafford are happy to host The Phoenix.

"In many ways, it shows we enjoy a high profile across Manchester. When our new arena is built, that will profile increase and hopefully, we can return the favour!"

The race gets under way at around 8pm on Wednesday evening.
