Baker cooks up a cup for Red Hockey

Wednesday, 29th July 2015

Red Hockey Director Paul Baker wants to create a “festival of ice hockey” next season, when teams fight it out for the Red Hockey Cup.

The competition will run between Telford Tigers, Manchester Phoenix and Bracknell Bees throughout the English Premier League campaign.

Regular season matches, and those played separately as Cup games, will count towards overall final placings, with the winner taking home a brand-new trophy.

Mr Baker - who also works with teams at both levels of the National Ice Hockey League – is looking

forward to watching the competition get underway.

He said: “Here at Red Hockey, we are all about making sure our supporters get the very best match night experience, at every single game.

“That is why we have created the Red Hockey Cup. The EPL is already very competitive, so another cup is going to make the season even better.

“On the ice, Telford, Manchester and Bracknell will give nothing away, which is the way it should be. It is going to be fascinating to see who wins.

“In the future, I want this competition to develop and become a real festival of ice hockey for supporters from all over the country.”

The first games will see The Tigers and Bracknell Bees meet on August 29th and 30th, before Manchester Phoenix play Telford on September 5th and 6th.

Alongside games during the season, Bracknell and Manchester will face each other at the end of February, in what could be a competition decider.

Mr Baker added: “Telford were worthy double-winners last season, but they will have to be at their very best to beat the Bees and Phoenix to the Red Hockey Cup.

“Every team in the league has improved over the summer, so nothing is a foregone conclusion. As a fan, I am so excited to get the season underway.

“Like everyone else involved in British ice hockey, it has been a long few months since the play-offs. Adding the Red Hockey Cup to the schedule will bring even more spice to an incredibly competitive year.”
