Steeldogs claim Roses honours

Sunday, 7th February 2016

Manchester Phoenix welcomed the Sheffield Steeldogs to Deeside for a rare Saturday evening game, missing James Archer through injury.

In an even first period, it was the visitors who made their chances count as Stanislav Lascek tipped in a shot at the five minute mark, before Andy Hirst converted on the Powerplay at 14:37.  In between, Phoenix were thwarted by Sheffield netminder Dalibor Sedlar, who produced a particularly good save to deny Stanislav Gron on a breakaway.

The second period followed a similar pattern as Ashley Calvert fired in off the post at 23:05 however Phoenix did get on the board when Michal Satek scored at the backdoor after being set up by Robin Kovar.  Two further goals from Arnoldas Bosas at 30:12 and then 34:14 with the aid of a huge deflection put Sheffield in command at 5-1.

Phoenix did reduce the arrears late in the period as Gron sliced his way through the defence to net at 39:29, before Sheffield instigated a series of scuffles at the end of the period, with surprisingly no penalties awarded.

Phoenix attempted to make further inroads into the Sheffield lead in the final period, and were rewarded when Jacob Corson-Heron tipped in a pass from Gron at 45:21.  However two late goals put the gloss on a deserved win as Ben Morgan fired home at 54:19 before Lascek scored his second of the night at 55:42 to make the final score 7-3.

Phoenix host the Guildford Flames in Deeside next Sunday with a 6:30pm face-off.
