Rink round up

Thursday, 20th January 2005

Coventry Blaze have booked their place in the Challenge Cup Final with a 5-3 aggregate win over current Cup holders Nottingham Panthers.  Wednesday night's action saw the Blaze going into the game sitting atop a 2-0 lead from the first leg, meaning that Nottingham had to win by three clear goals to secure their place in the final.  But it proved to be not their night, with the Blaze finding the net twice in the second period through Adam Calder and Josef Lukac.

However, the Panthers refused to roll over, putting two markers of their own on the scoreboard through Kim Ahlroos and Mark Cadotte to tei the game on the night. Panthers then went ahead through Marek Ivan, bringing them to within one goal of tying the aggregate, but a late netter from Doug Schueller tied the match for the Blaze and gave them the victory on aggregate.

Coventry will go on to face either Sheffield Steelers or Cardiff Devils in the Challenge Cup Final, with the Cardiff Devils keen to show off their latest signing.  John Craighead recently left the Nottingham Panthers and has agreed terms with the Devils, and may be fit to play in the second leg of the Steelers - Devils Semi tonight.  Craighead is a replacement signing for injured Devils captain Ed Patterson, after being sidelined himself with a bout of the mumps, but the Devils are hoping to be able to ice him in the Semi.  If not, it looks like he will most likely be on the ice for the Devils at the Wales National Ice Rink this Sunday, against his old team Nottingham Panthers.
