Phoenix confirm Captain and Alternates

Sunday, 17th September 2006

Manchester Phoenix head coach Tony Hand has confirmed his team captain and alternate captains for the 2006/07 bmibaby Elite League campaign.

In naming defenceman Scott Basiuk as Club Captain and fellow blueliners Simon Mangos and David Vychodil as the Alternate Captains, Hand commented, “Any of my players could have taken such a role on the team but I’ve chosen Scott, Simon and David All three are experienced players and are pleased they have been given this responsibility. With the new zero tolerance rules in place this season, it is important that the players, and officials, know exactly who and who cannot address the referee over any given incident as non A’s and C’s are liable for an immediate penalty.”

Basiuk beamed as he noted, “I’ve been a captain and an alternate before and I relish the challenge and responsibility. As Tony said, in the short space of time we’ll all been together, I think anyone could have taken one of these roles so naturally, I’m pleased he’s got faith in not only myself but, Simon and David too.”

Simon Mangos who only arrived on the eve of the first game against Edinburgh and David Vychodil who missed both the first weekend games with a slight knock also expressed their delight at being given a key role on the team. “I’m still settling in after barely a week in Manchester,” remarked Mangos, “so this is indeed an honour to be chosen as an alternate so quickly.”

Vychodil joked as he said, “I’ve only played the one challenge game so, I must have made a good impression. Seriously like Simon, this is an honour so soon after joining a new team and as with my playing, I want to do my best for this club.”
