April Fool: Phoenix to confirm new goalie signing?

Friday, 1st April 2005

As many of you no doubt realised this was just our little April Fools joke. For those of you that missed it, the full item is left here for posterity!

With the Elite League 2005-2006 season laying in wait up ahead, Manchester Phoenix have been making the first moves towards assembling a squad to challenge for the Elite League title. Despite the domestic season still being underway, Phoenix MD Neil Morris is in a bouyant mood about the team building work:

"It's true that we're facing a tough challenge in signing players for the right price. The growing cost to Manchester Phoenix of developing a new rink has taken it's toll on our bank balance, so we've had to look carefully at all the options ahead of us. Drastic times call for drastic measures, and with this in mind, I'm pleased to announce that I will be the first signing for the Manchester Phoenix for this coming season."

Never one to shirk from responsibility, Morris has been secretly training for months now. Taking to the ice at both the Deeside and Blackburn rinks as a goaltender, Morris has been receiving tips from top local netminder Dave Clancy.

Clancy is philosophical about Morris's progress. "He certainly means well," Clancy muses, "and playing in goal is definitely the best position for him. All the padding keeps him well protected and hidden from the prying eyes of the public. We even tested that theory by having him play for Blackburn in my shirt the other week and nobody noticed. He pulled off some excellent saves and gave me time to get on with my cross-stitch of the Great Wall of China. I'm nearly done now, I just need some more blue thread and I'm sorted."
