Phoenix fight hard but go down in Surrey

Sunday, 23rd November 2014

Guildford Flames 4 - Manchester Phoenix 3

Phoenix scorers: Ben Wood, Shaun Thompson and Tony Hand

Phoenix worked their socks off but fell just short in a seven goal shoot out at the Spectrum in Guildford.

The first period was goal-less with both netminders making good saves to keep the scoresheet blank. One other incident of note was a minor altercation between Jez Lundin of the Flames and Bobby Chamberlain for which they both received a 2+2 minor penalty.

Ben Wood put the visitors ahead with just 3 minutes gone in the second period and the visitors held that lead until the final five minutes in which Flames scored two goals through Curtis Huppe and Jozef Kohut. End of 40 minutes 2-1 to the home side.

Branislav Kvetan hit Flames’ third goal early in the third period and ex Phoenix favourite Andrew McKinney appeared to put the game beyond his old team with Flames’ fourth goal. Two very late goals by Shaun Thompson and Tony Hand made it 4-3 but the Phoenix revival ran out of time and the points stayed down south.

Phoenix are back in action Sunday night 23rd November when they entertain Milton Keynes Lightning for the first time this season at the Dome with the usual 17:30 face off.
