"Lessons to learn," says Thompson

Tuesday, 15th April 2008

"To be honest I am shell shocked," admitted GB Head Coach Paul Thompson after GB were beaten 10-5 by host and number one seeds Austria. "Let's be honest we played a very good team with a lot of very good players, they were better than us, though I have to say that we made some errors that made life hard for us.

"The last thing we needed was to get into a shoot out, you can't get into a shoot out with the best team in the competition. You can't take penalties the way we did, did you see their power play, it was very good. Perhaps we showed our inexperience, that we are still a young team, I don't want to say men and boys, but that's the reality in some area's.

"On the flip side we scored four power play goals, we moved the puck well, got it to the net and took our chances. The honesty of the situation is that our World Championships begin on Wednesday when we play Korea and then on Friday and Saturday against Holland and Kazakhstan. Win those games and we win a medal and that's progression for our programme and this team.

"My job now is to lift a few heads as some of the guys are down, we will soon bounce back and I am confident we will beat Korea on Wednesday."
