Saturday

Hull Stingrays 2 Cardiff Devils 3 (after overtime)

An always tight, tence and chippy encounter saw the visiting Devils grab the extra point with an overtime strike on the powerplay by Dave Iannazzo timed at 62.56.  For the home side it was their third straight loss starting life in the bmi Elite League but at least they are now on the board points wise.  The opening period was goalless but noteable for 72 penalty minutes, including fighting majors for Devil Paul Sample and Stingray Simon Rizk, a 5+game for boarding on Devils' Brad Voth and a match penalty for headbutting on the home sides Kevin Young.

A powerplay goal by Tyson Teplitsky saw Devils ahead in the 28th minute and Mark Smith doubled the advantage in the 36th.  Stingrays however pulled one back in the 39th minute thanks to Nikolei Ladygin to set up an interesting third period.  On a delayed penalty call Justyn Scholler tied it up in the 44th minute and despite outshooting the visitors 16-8 the game produced no more goals before the 60 minutes were up but when Ladygin was binned for tripping at 62.15 Devils made the extra man count.

The visiting Steelers were quickly out of the traps and Shawn Maltby opened in the 4th minute followed by Dan Tessier on the powerplay 2 minutes later. That's how it remained until Rod Sarich extended the advantage, again on the powerplay in the 27th minute.

Mark Morrison pulled one back 2 minutes later but Giants then hit serious penalty trouble losing Todd Kelman to a 10 minute misconduct and Shawn Skiehar to a 2+10+game+match before the second break. It looked all over for the home side when Sarich netted again early in the third period but inspiration came from within the Odyssey Arena and goals by son Ruff and George Awada both powerplay, followed by Jeff Hutchins in the 53rd minute made it 4-4. This crazy game was not yet finished - far from it - A powerplay goal by Shaun Sutter saw Steelers ahead again but Awada took it to overtime with a goal at 59.07. Steelers' Jonathan Phillips went on a 2+10 for checking from behind in the first minute of overtime and the home side took full advantage as Curtis Huppe shot home the winner at 61.19.
